What is a parasite cleanse?
A diet, supplement, or other detox product intended to eliminate parasites from the body without using prescription medications. A long road, a tough protocol, a big commitment!
Dietary restrictions
Important! Avoid sugar, meat and processed meat products, eggs, seafood, gluten, and dairy. Essentially, consider a plant-based diet.
NOTE: Keep a shopping list handy to avoid buying “no no” foods. Parasites, yeast, and mucus (all living things) thrive off foods high in fat, and high in sugar. Getting off track and eating the wrong foods can be counter productive.
A word of advice
Stay away from fruit! Fruit has no added sugar, but you still get “sugar uptake” when you eat fruit – and fruit can be “fruitful” for those pesky little buggers. This only applies to a parasite diet. Not a normal day to day diet.

Exceptions to the rule
Berries are okay in moderation.
Papaya and Pineapple are okay to eat as they contain powerful enzymes that help eliminate parasites.
If Candida is present – avoid ALL fruit! Candida overgrowth is a discussion for another time.
Food prep
Try to eat organic food during a parasite cleanse. Cleaning your produce – organic or not – is extremely important.
Food cleaning tips
- Hydrogen peroxide (HP) is one of the best choices and especially good for germs or disease pathogens. Mix 50/50 mixture of water and 3 percent HP right out of the bottle from the grocery store. Spray or soak the produce in the mix, rinse, and dry.
- Baking Soda option – Use 1 TBSP of baking soda per cup of water. Spray or soak produce. Let sit for a few minutes, and rinse.
- Alternative – Shake baking soda onto the surface of hard skinned fruits or vege and rub in with a bit of water. Abrasion helps remove wax and other residue.
Contracting and diagnosis
Most people contract parasites by eating or handling contaminated meat, fruit, and vege. Touching and kissing pets, through fecal contamination, or contact with unclean water. Other popular sources are unclean shower floors, tools in nail salons, and barefoot in public places!
The World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that tens of millions of people worldwide have parasites living in their bodies. Diagnosing parasite infections is difficult in Canada, as most medical doctors don’t recognize parasitic infections exist here.
Worms and Protozoa are two of the most common forms that feed on a host and cause a variety of symptoms that affect your digestive system and many other body systems. They love to feed on sugar, fat, and junk food!
Gut parasite symptoms
Symptoms can be similar to the physical symptoms of other illnesses. Confirming you have parasites is difficult at best.
Common symptoms include:
- Unexpected or long-term digestive issues like diarrhea, gas or constipation
- Progressive weight loss or weight gain
- Constant hunger and not feeling full, even after eating a big meal
- Rashes and hives around the vagina and anus
- Muscle and joint aches
- Chronic headaches or migraines
- Unexplained anxiety issues or other mental attacks
- Unusual fatigue
- Teeth grinding
- Recurring yeast infections

Acute manifestations of parasitic infection may involve diarrhea with or without mucus and/or blood, fever, nausea, and abdominal pain.
If left untreated, chronic parasitic infections can cause damage to the intestinal lining and can cause illness and fatigue.
Chronic parasitic infections can be associated with increased intestinal permeability, irritable bowel syndrome, irregular bowel movements, malabsorption, gastritis or indigestion, skin disorders, joint pain, allergic reactions, and decreased immune function.
Parasites can enter the circulation and travel to various organs causing severe organ diseases like liver abscesses and cysticercosis.
If you suspect you have parasites, talk to your Therapist about your symptoms and book a few colon cleanses to confirm your suspicions! When confirmed, you should consider next steps. Having said that… I will warn you, dealing with parasites is no easy task. There is no easy way out, and protocols can take anywhere from 3 months to many years depending on how bad your infestation is.
A word from the wise
