For those who know me… I will post pictures of my results after my cleanse. Not for the faint of heart. Smiley face 🙂
Why am I doing this? Fat metabolism! Your liver needs to be healthy if you intend to manage fat. Your liver is your body’s fat-burning furnace. If you have tried everything to rid your body of belly fat, but it just keeps piling on, your liver may be overworked. In this case, it doesn’t matter what you do, you have to tend to liver health first.
Preparing for your liver cleanse
If you are eating a diet high in processed foods, you are putting the health of your liver at risk. These foods work against liver health. Hydrogenated oils, refined sugar, convenience foods and lunch meats are known to be toxic to your system. These foods can overwork your liver and render it useless when it comes to dealing with belly fat among other things. Your liver is your fat-burning furnace.
Remove toxic foods from your diet, make fresh raw vegetable juice, eat potassium rich foods, take milk thistle or dandelion root, add good olive oil and citrus to your diet, do coffee enemas, or take liver tablets daily. Be very careful if you’re adding nut and seed oils to your diet. Excessive consumption of PUFA from seed oils, can be very damaging to the body.
Best foods
1) Leafy greens
Green leafy vegetables are high in chlorophyll and soak up a lot of toxins from the bloodstream. They’re packed with vitamins, minerals and fibre and do not add too much to your calorie count making them the go-to food. Diets rich in leafy greens reduce the risk of obesity, heart disease and high blood pressure.
2) Cruciferous Vegetables
Cruciferous vegetables – a major source of glutathione. Glutathione triggers cleansing enzymes that help flush out carcinogens and other toxic waste from the body. Add foods like broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower to your diet.
3) Fatty fish / Omega 3s
If you love seafood, you add fresh tuna, arctic char, anchovies, sardines and mackerel to your diet. These fatty fish are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids that reduce inflammation in your body. Research says they prevent the buildup of excess fats and maintain enzyme levels in the liver.
4) Garlic
Packed with antibacterial agents and selenium, garlic activates liver detox enzymes. These enzymes work on eliminating toxins from the body.
5) Nuts
High in fats and nutrients, nuts are good for the gut. Eating nuts improves levels of liver enzymes. Add walnuts generously to your diet because they contain high levels of glutathione and omega 3 fatty acids that support liver cleansing naturally. Almonds are also rich in vitamins that help the liver.
6) Infusions
Did you know that coffee and tea are good for the liver? Coffee reduces the risk of liver cancer while herbal teas, especially green tea is high in antioxidants. Infuse rosemary – also very beneficial for the liver.
7) Spices & Herbs
Turmeric is a magic spice. Curcumin, an active ingredient in turmeric flushes out toxins and repairs the liver cells.
Reduce the risk of fatty liver disease by adding Cardamom to your dishes. Cardamom may decrease elevated liver enzymes, triglyceride and cholesterol levels, and prevent liver enlargement and liver weight.
8) Oils
Consider olive oil for cooking if your doctor has advised you to switch to an oil that reduces fat accumulation in the liver. Olive oil provides improved insulin sensitivity and blood levels of liver enzymes. It will help you prepare for an effective liver cleanse. Take 2-4 Tbsp. olive oil daily with lemon and sea salt while preparing for your cleanse.
Avocados are a wonderful source of oil in their whole form. If you’re not a fan of the avocado in its natural form, try adding them to smoothies for a nice creamy consistency and taste. They are easily frozen also once pitted and skinned.
9) Alternative grains
Whole grain products like oatmeal, brown rice, millet and barley are great for the liver. High in fibre, these foods reduce the storage of sugar in the liver.
10) Fruits, Berries and Vege
Ensure your diet includes citrus fruit, especially grapefruit and oranges. Other fruits like apples and pears are good sources of fibre. Vege like carrots, beets, kale are great for the gut and stimulate the liver. Fresh juices made from all of the above are excellent for the liver.
