COVID infection and gut health

COVID and gut health

The severity of a COVID infection is now closely connected to gut health and the gastrointestinal tract. So, if you want to avoid a severe case of COVID, long COVID or chronic long term health issues from COVID, start looking after your gut health!

January 2021 Study – American Society for Microbiology

This 2021 study determined that gut dysbiosis and leaky gut may allow the COVID virus to enter the bloodstream causing multiple organ complications.

Our Microbiome

Each of us has an internal complex ecosystem of bacteria in our bodies that we call the microbiome. The vast majority (approx. 70%) of the bacterial species that make up our microbiome live in our digestive system, or… our gut.

Microbiome – defined as a community of microbes – or – your genetic footprint.

Microbes help determine our unique DNA, hereditary factors, predisposition to diseases, body type, body “set point, and so much more!

Gut health and microbiome

What’s fascinating is the microbiome is different than other organs. It does not reside in one location. It has far-reaching roles tied to so many different bodily functions, and it’s not very large in size.

Research confirms “up to 90% of all diseases” can be traced back to gut health and health of the microbiome.

Eating to protect and support immune health during the COVID-19 pandemic

The microbes that live in your gut (microbiome) play an important role in maintaining your immune system and overall health. Eating the right foods for your microbiome help to support your immune system and overall health.

Your immune system protects you against viruses like coronavirus, but an immune overreaction can be be a problem. Your gut plays an important role in regulating your immune responses. What you eat can support your gut health and your immunity.

Eating healthy foods that support your gut microbiome can also protect you by keeping your gut healthy. An important line of defence against ALL infectious diseases.

If you’re about to take a trip to your local grocery store? Put some thought into which foods you prioritize to keep your immune system and gut health in tip-top shape!

The Pandemic

We are living in concerning times. COVID-19 put the whole world on high alert, and in 2020 the World Health Organization officially declared a pandemic.

What happened next? Total lockdown! Countries closed borders, sporting events were cancelled, non-essential businesses, bars and restaurants were shuttered.

You feel like you have no control? There are many positive things you can do to protect your health and that of the people around you.

First and foremost, follow Public Health guidelines for preventing COVID-19. Avoid spreading the virus and cut your chances of catching it by wearing your mask in public settings. Wash your hands regularly, avoid touching your face, and reduce contact with others.

Vaccinated? Don’t have to follow guidelines?

False! Fully vaccinated? Keep in mind – your vaccine lowers your chance of dying from COVID. It does NOT keep you from catching COVID or spreading COVID to others. Traditional vaccines are administered for the safety of the person receiving them. Your vaccine protects you, NOT other people. This fact is largely misunderstood.

Not sure about vaccinating?

Speak to your healthcare provider, discuss alternative options, test regularly, and wear your mask. Making the decision to vaccinate should not be under duress. Feeling comfortable with your decision is the most important thing.

Remember… gut health is the most important thing for fighting off any infection that comes your way – not just a coronavirus.
